Defense of Prulus VI -- BatRep Space Marines vs. CSM

The Scouring, Dawn of War, 4500 points -- November 24, 2012

Prulus VI, on the edge of Imperial space was suddenly attacked by the forces of Chaos. Detachments from three Space Chapters, the Space Wolves, the White Templars, and the Iron Storm were in the area and rushed to the planet's defense. In the ruins of an old agricultural silo facility, these two armies collided.

The White Templar force (1500 points), commanded by Librarian Grammatacus consisted of:
* Librarian Grammaticus in terminator armor with a force stave and a storm shield
* Tactical Squad I (10) with a plasmagun and a lascannon
* Tactical Squad IV (10) with a plasmagun and a missile launcher
* Scout Squad VIII (6) with a missile launcher and Sgt. Castle (Telion)
* Terminator Squad III (5) with an assault cannon and chainfist
* Sternguard Squad V (10) with 2 combi-meltas and a power fist
* A Land Speeder Typhoon from Squadron II
* Brother Veritas the Dreadnought with extra armor
* Brother Zeus and his Thunderfire Cannon

The Space Wolves had 6 thunder wolf cavalry, 2 Long Fang squads of missile launchers, and three tactical squads in rhinos. The Iron Storm chapter had 2 tactical squads in drop pods, a thunderfire cannon, a flyer, some scout snipers, a Land Speeder Storm, and two vindicators.

The forces of Chaos consisted of two defilers, a vindicator, some obliterators,two squads of plague marines, a demon prince of Khorne, a Slaanesh lord, Noise marines, two or three squads of CSM, some cultists, some havocs, some terminators, some raptors, a land raider, a couple rhinos, 3 bikes, and maybe some other stuff.

The field was dominated by two large silos in the middle leaving three alleys of approach between the forces - the middle and on each flank. Objectives scattered with one in the left alley, 2 in the middle alley, one on the loyalist left, one on the loyalist right and one on the right in Chaos territory.

Chaos had the initiative and elected to set up first, aligning itself all along its front with the defilers on the right and the vindicator on the left. Loyalist set-up concentrated behind the two silos out of line of fire from the pie plates and with good fields of fire on all three approach lanes, especially the middle one. The Loyalist plan was for the Thunderwolves to lead Loyalist forces around the right flank while holding the left flank. The middle, with its two objectives was to be a killing ground. Objectives revealed that the 4 was in the alley on the left, a 2 in the loyalist left, a 3 on the loyalist side of the center alley, a 1 on the chaos side of the center alley, a 2 on the chaos right and a 3 in the loyalist right. The 4 pointed on the left changed the battle plan for the Loyalists, now they needed to move up on the left as well. Loyalists failed to steal the initiative.

Chaos turn 1 advanced but failed to kill anything with shooting.

Loyalists turn 1. Drop pod arrived behind chaos vindicator and killed it with shooting. One Chaos rhino died on the left. 2 or 3 plague marines died from thunderfire shots, and there were some other casualties. it was a very good turn for us.

As the game progressed, the six thunderwolf cav came around the on our right and plowed into the chaos backfield taking out several units including the demon prince. The center became a killing zone where the land raider died as we filled it with thunderfire shots and vindicator blasts. On our left, the White Templar dreadnought was immobilized and traded shots with a hellbrute until other units took out the helbrute and the other rhino. Also on the right, forces from the first drop pod assaulted the havocs tying them up for most of the game.

Chaos made a late game push with some Khorne berserkers on the 4 point objective on the left and the 3 point center objective with some plague marines, a CSM squad, and the Slaanesh lord. The bezerkers killed 4 Sternguard but the sgt. got away. A large number of the bezerkers were shot by the remaining Sternguard, long fangs, scouts, half a tactical squad. In the next turn they assaulted some scouts but failed to kill them all and they were finished off by the Sternguard sgt. who charged back in with his power fist. This eliminated the Chaos from the left side.

In the center, the chaos lord with lightning claws was wrapped up with the White Templar terminators and librarian. (I should have refused his challenge and let the power fists kill him, but I didn't.) The plague marines and the CSM were crushed by the thunderfires, a rifleman dread, a long fang squad, and some other fire. There was one plague marine and 3 CSM left in the center at the end of turn 5.

On the right, loyalist forces had curled around and seized the 2 point objective, holding it with a tactical squad while a librarian and another squad held of the two surviving chaos terminators and the cultists.

Chaos abandoned the fight when it was rolled to go to turn 6.

We got lucky turn 1, and they got unlucky. They never recovered. Our templates were brutal and my T-fire is my MVP again. It did a number on several squads including the plague marines, the terminators, and the last oblit. Not sure if I got the least use from my terminators or my dread, both did not make back their points. But the dread drew fire away from more fragile units and the terminators tied up the lord who was wrecking our backfield. The thunderwolf cav was also awesome and the two drop pods came in beautifully.
